  • Global waste is expected to increase by 70% by 2050 without significant changes in how we handle waste (World Bank Report).

  • Only 9% of the world’s plastic waste has ever been recycled, while the rest is piling up in landfills or polluting our oceans (United Nations Environment Programme).

  • In the U.S., the average person generates 4.9 pounds of waste per day, resulting in over 292.4 million tons annually (EPA Report).


These statistics make it clear that current waste management systems are not sustainable. The future demands innovative solutions—one of which is home and street-level domestic waste processing.


What is Home and Street-Level Waste Processing?

Traditional waste management systems rely on centralized processing facilities, which often lead to inefficiencies, high costs, and environmental damage due to long-distance transportation and landfill use. The idea of home or street-level waste processing involves decentralized systems that process waste at the source—directly in homes or on streets. This method could dramatically reduce the burden on traditional waste systems while empowering people to manage waste more efficiently at a local level.


By enabling households and communities to process organic waste, recycle efficiently, and even generate energy, these systems could reduce the environmental impact of waste disposal and turn waste into valuable resources.

Several companies and startups are already pioneering this concept with promising technologies:

  • HomeBiogas has created a compact system that converts organic waste into cooking gas and fertilizer. This allows households to process waste on-site, reducing landfill use and creating renewable energy (HomeBiogas).

  • Lasso Loop is developing a home appliance that sorts, cleans, and recycles materials such as glass, plastic, and metals. By processing recyclables directly in homes, it aims to significantly improve recycling rates (Lasso Loop).

  • Waga Energy is exploring ways to capture and convert landfill gas into renewable energy at the community level, turning waste into a valuable energy source (Waga Energy).

The shift to home and street-level waste processing has the potential to solve several global issues:
